Seven Superfoods to Include in Your Diet
By Emily Smith
Good morning! How was your weekend? We had some pretty chilly/damp weather, so we spent most of our time indoors – baking, reading, watching old movies, and on Sunday we went to the Ottawa Veg Festival (thankfully held inside the Glebe Community Center). I was happy to be introduced to a few new local vendors, including Olivia Chocolat, from whom I bought some incredibly decadent 86% dark raw chocolate. I was excited to read that it is locally made, fair-trade, gluten-free, dairy-free, and organic! While I was eating a piece of chocolate last night, I was flipping through the latest issue of Alive magazine and reading up on some of the benefits of lemon and honey. It got me thinking about all of the superfoods and how important they are to add to our diets.
I’m sure you’ve heard the term superfoods many times before, so this is just a refresher. A gentle reminder to include some of those nutrient packed foods into your diet on a daily basis. There are many superfoods that you can add to the list, I just rounded up a few that I am including in our diets regularly. I’ve also created a Superfoods Pinterest Board that has a more extensive list. What are superfoods? They are foods that are considered to give great health benefits and are extra nutritious. The ‘super’ also describes foods with high phytonutrient content.
Seven Superfoods to try:
- Green Tea: It contains antioxidants useful for protection against cancer and free radical molecules. Green tea also fights inflammation in the body, can lower cholesterol and improve your blood sugar balance
- Pomegranates: Also antioxidant rich, pomegranates and pure pomegranate juice has been shown to help fight heart disease.
- Ginger:A natural anti-inflammatory, ginger helps prevent inflammation in the body. It’s also great for helping with nausea, digestion, and pms. (Try my ginger apple tea)
- Broccoli: Contains high amounts of phytonutrients called isothiocyanates (sulforaphane and indole-3 carbinol). These phytonutrients help the liver to detoxify harmful, cancer-causing compounds.
- Flax Seeds: Improve your heart health with these super seeds. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and lignans. Grind them and add them to smoothies and baking!
- Dark Chocolate: One square a day gives you a happy little high, is good for your heart, and blood vessels, boosts endorphins, and promotes feelings of attraction, excitement, and love.
- Buckwheat: High in protein and fiber, it helps get your immune system in top shape. It can also lower cholesterol and is a source of magnesium. Buckwheat flour is a great alternative to wheat flour and adds a tasty nutty flavor to your baking. (Buckwheat muffins are a favorite)
Your turn, what are some of your favorite superfoods? Let me know in the comments!
Wishing you a not-so-manic Monday
