The 3 Day Jump Start Smoothie Detox

I bet you are really conscious about what goes into your body. We sure are. Of course, there’s always room for improvement, but overall we are healthy eaters in our home. One or two green smoothies a day, plenty of vegetables, gluten-free whole grains, lean meats and antioxidant extras; such as chia seeds, coconut oil and organic green tea.
SO WHY WOULD YOU OR I NEED TO DETOX?

Well, I don’t think we need to.  I think it feels good, so I’ll tell you why I detox and also share my new 3 Day Jump Start Smoothie Detox Plan with you, if you’d like to give it a try!

“Golden Glow Green Smoothie”

The purpose of cleansing is to take the load off the organs that detoxify our bodies and help improve their regular detoxing functions. Our stomach, bowel, liver, and kidneys work hard and a detox is said to give them a break. There are mixed views on cleanses/detoxes – so I’d love to hear your opinion.

Personally, a light detox consisting of plenty (sufficient calories) of nutritious foods, rest, deep stretching, and being good to yourself – isn’t a bad thing. During my detox, I eliminate from my diet – hard-to-digest foods, caffeine, dairy, sugars, and alcohol. I focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, healthy oils and lots of water.

During a detox, you also take the time to give your whole body and mind some extra TLC. Maybe that means booking a day off from work and making it a three-day weekend. Maybe it means creating an at-home spa for yourself. Maybe it means journaling for 3 days straight and getting rid of some mind clutter. Maybe it means sleeping in, waking up slowly, sipping tea in bed until noon and reading a good book. Perhaps all of the above. The point is to give your system a rest, reboot, especially if you haven’t been eating healthy, rejuvenate and jump start your body; filling it with supercharged fuel and energy.

    1. Hi Charlie,

I don’t have a shopping list for the ingredients! A few people have asked me to create one and it’s a matter of pulling it together (one day!) Hope you can jot down what you need at the market and enjoy your smoothies! 🙂

      1. Hey Emily my boyfriend and I just finished the detox and it was great. The cookie was really tough and hard to eat. The roasted vegetable was my favourite. After 3 day was thinking about doing it again bit longer maybe someday.

  8. Hi Emily, my husband and I are going to start the detox tomorrow but I am having a hard time finding some of the ingredients, I assume that it will be ok to repeat some of the smoothies instead of having different ones every day, am I correct?

    1. Hi Karena, I’m excited that you’ll be doing the smoothie detox! You can definitely sub with other smoothie recipes (look here for more: http://www.bestofthislife.com/recipes/smoothies) I would just choose ones that are dairy-free (99% of mine are, for the exception of a few w/ yogourt which you can leave out) and lean towards green smoothies (kale or spinach included). Hope you enjoy your New Year’s reboot 😉

  9. Hey there! Just finished the three days (Ok I cheated last night and had some weetbix)
    It’s actually really good!
Also, the habby belly papaya smoothie is literally the best thing ever! It felt like I was eating some sort of coconut butter thing! DELISH!

  10. I want to THANK YOU! for taking the time to share such a delicious detox plan! I finished last night and really feel revitalized! There were tough times during meal prep for my family and I did dream about my New Year’s Eve feast the first night… That was the first time I have ever dreamed about food! The best part of this journey is the sheer delight I had in preparing each meal and snack. I really looked forward to trying new combinations! Today, I gently waltzed back to the coffee maker but went for a soymilk based light coffee. I am sold on the green tea in the morning and love to carry around lemon water all day! I look forward to trying your other recipes and want to commend you for such a beautiful and inspiring website! Blessings and Light to you and yours in this new year!!!

  11. I’m on day 6 of a green smoothie detox and feeling great. I’m in Costa Rica enjoying a lot of great locally grown organic fruits and veg which makes it even more enjoyable 🙂

  12. I did this last weekend – and I feel great 🙂 I was worried I’d be hungry but I wasn’t needing to eat the full meal until about 8pm and the smoothies were great. The curry soup was just delicious, I shall be making it again! Do you have links to other recipes, not detox just healthy ideas?

    Clare

  13. I started this detox today. I felt strong earlier through out the day but at the moment I am feeling weak and light headed. Is that normal?

    1. Hi Martiza, it’s normal to feel light headed on a detox. It’s important to stay at home, remain low-key and drink lots of water. If you are light-headed because you are hungry, make another smoothie or ”clean” snack/meal. Please remember that you should always consult a physician before attempting any cleanse/detox (as noted in the disclaimer, I am not a physician). I do encourage you to rest, drink lots of water, and make another smoothie anytime you are hungry. You are flushing your body’s toxins out by ingesting plenty of nutrients. Please let me know how it goes for you 🙂

  14. Day one done! I’m doing this before and after the master cleanse in preparation for my wedding on sept 13 🙂 any idea what the nutrition facts are for your recipes? So far they’re delicious and I’m looking forward to the rest of them!

    1. Hi Ashley, congratulations on your engagement! I’m glad that you are enjoying the 3 Day Jump Start Smoothie Detox! You can get an approximate idea of nutritional/caloric value by copy & pasting the recipe here: http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/recipe_analysis.php I created the smoothie detox as a kind, gentle cleanse – ridding your diet of junk and helping digestion…glowing skin and weight loss are bonuses 😉 Best of luck and happy wedding day!! (*please note disclaimer* this is my personal experience) Warmly, Emily

  15. I am currently doing this detox! I was just curious if I could repeat snacks? Particularly the rice crackers and almond butter, would this mess with the detoxification process?

    1. Hi Sarah, I hope you are enjoying the detox! This is a gentle detox, meant to eliminate processed foods, alcohol, sugars from the body – repeating the snacks with are sugar free and healthy will be fine for your body. As always, if you have concerns, check with your Dr. Thanks!

  16. I’m giving this plan a try! thanks for all the info. What is a good substitute for the olive tapenade? I don’t really like olives. Is it the high salt content of the olives that I need to replace, or oil or fiber? Let me know some ideas. thanks!

    1. Hi Lynne! That’s great, hope you enjoy it! As for the olive tapenade, it’s really to add some healthy oil/fat and flavour to the meal. You could maybe just drizzle some olive oil on the vegetables instead, or have a side of hummus to dip the veggies in…or skip it all together.

  17. Just finished the 3 day detox. On the one side, I don’t really feel energized or different after 3 days… but on the bright side, I’ve tried some new foods and I think some of the recipes are good!

  18. Hi Emily,
I found this three day jump start smoothie detox when researching for options for me and my 14 year old daughter. We regularly eat pretty healthy and I cook often with whole foods and lean protein…but we have our moments. I am a Certified Health and Wellness Coach and am starting a coaching practice along with our specialty coffeehouse and cafe Bittersweet Coffeehouse in Huntington, WV–along with our life-style brand store A Southern Co.

The thing is, I haven’t done anything with my Coaching certification and now is the time to start….so I am my own first client. I felt your plan was a good one full of nutrients etc. that would be good for my daughter as well…..since she is only 14 etc.

We finished Day one and I have lots of great pics……I am going to use this kick-start as my first post entry for the Health & wellness section of my blog and wanted to clarify a few things.

Do these smoothies need to be in this exact order……for example could we make the banana smoothie for breakfast tomorrow Day 2 instead of Day 3…..or is there a reason they are in this order.

Also, I am assuming the recipes are to yield one smoothie…..which is what I did…..looks like it was about 20 oz.

Lastly, can I have no caffeine at all during the detox? Owning a coffeehouse makes this a little hard, haha.

I know your plan says to add in an extra smoothie if you feel hungry or snack on something whole….is there anything to stay away from, or would any fruit, veggie, nut-butter etc. be okay? My daughter didn’t care for the soup but I thought it was great, so I worried about her eating something.

I gave her coconut milk yogurt with fresh blackberries a teaspoon of local honey and a plash of coconut almond milk after dinner to make sure she had a full tummy……so I think that was good.

I know how to plan a balanced meal and/or diet, but have not ever tried any type of detox or cleanse and would like to make sure I am not “Undoing” anything that is good…..

    1. Hi Rita,

Thanks for your comment! I’m glad that you are enjoying the smoothie detox. This is a “loose” plan to encourage a light detox and break from eating heavy foods. So, the guidelines are really just that – guidelines to help create a personal framework for what is personally achievable. The smoothies don’t have to be consumed in order, you can substitute any of the meal ideas for another light, healthy meal option and if you can’t give up coffee for the duration, then I would just lower your intake and up your water consumption to make sure your body is hydrated and absorbing all those good nutrients. The smoothie recipes are for one person – you can easily double them! Hope that helps clarify some things for you and I hope that you enjoy doing “light” detoxes here and there to help reset your body to want to reach for healthy, fresh foods everyday! Best of luck on all of your endeavours Rita!! xo

  19. Hi! I want to start doing this detox, I was wondering if I can replace some of the ingredients since I dont find them here in Argentina. For example, figs, cranberries and papaya. I thought that any other berry instead of the cranberries, and maybe mango for the papaya, but have no idea of which other fruit would work instead of figs. Thanks a lot!

    Flor

    1. Hi Florencia,

Thank you for your questions. Yes, the berries would be a great substitute for the cranberries and mango for the papaya. Do you have any stone fruit, like peaches, nectarines or apricots? That could be a good sub for figs? Or, you could just repeat one of the other smoothie recipes that you have ingredients for. Wishing you a lovely Smoothie detox xo

      1. Thanks a lot Emily! We did and finished the detox last Saturday. I ended up replacing the smoothie for the detox beet apple smoothie … It’s winter here so it is hard to find many fresh fruits. I really liked it and felt great the day after, with lot of energy. I must admit that the second day was the harder and the third one the easiest 😉 Maybe next time I’ll repeat in summer. XO

  20. Just tried this detox for 3 days as my family are away and I have a week to myself – I love fruit and veg and don’t eat gluten or dairy or drink much anyway so I thought it would be easy – and it was, the smoothies were really nice – I love the golden glow one. But I just feel awful now. Am on day three and have had a headache since day 2 morning, and my tummy is just awful, keep needing the loo! I didn’t think this would be that drastic a change from my normal diet – but my body definitely isn’t happy, I don’t know if it is craving sugar or salt or what… but it’s saying don’t just give me fruit and veg and seeds and nuts !

I relented at 2pm today and had a boiled egg with gf toast. Then tonight some fish and rice and roasted veg. Still got a pounding headache and a very poorly tummy.

I’m not at all convinced detoxing is a good idea. I thought it was supposed to make you feel good???

    1. Hi Anne,

I’m so sorry you are having headaches and an upset stomach. Sometimes it isn’t until we detox or eliminate foods we’re dependent on (sugar/salt/starch) that are body has a break to release toxin build up. While you are doing a detox, you can feel lethargic and have headaches – any one who gives up a stimulant like caffeine or sugar will feel that way initially – but then, like a drug, once you are passed the withdrawal symptoms, you start to feel better and healthier and your body begins operating better, because it operates with fuel from fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. instead of fuel from stimulants like starch (sugar), processed foods, sugar, and caffeine. Try to rest, take warm baths, meditate, and drink lots and lots of water to stay hydrated. Again, you can do a more gentle detox, where you eliminate certain foods and just eat healthy – so you are still eating but you are eliminating eating junk food. Even small changes, like replacing a heavy meal (eggs, bacon, toast) with a vitamin-full smoothie is a great way to care for your body 🙂 Warmly, Emily
