[…] their relationship from their first encounter through adventures in love, exploring careers, boy troubles, jealousy, Liza Minnelli and much, much more. Their friendship is tested as these two women not only get to know each other but themselves. Witness the best and the worst of their friendship […]
Episode 1 // Friend or Foe?: Jill works in a plant store (at least for the moment) and is dealing with inconsiderate roommates that are driving her to her limit. Jenny, recently single from a long-term relationship, is shopping for a plant to brighten up her new apartment. By chance, these two crazy strangers meet. After a mistaken romantic come on and the discovery of their shared love of almond milk and Casablanca, Jill and Jenny become roommates.
So who are these two ladies? Talented actors, writers, and producers. Oh, and one happens to be my big sis!
We are Jessica Kennedy and Jessica Lafrance. Jess Lafrance has made her own fantastic short film Flowers in February, completed a Theatre degree and worked for a prominent production company. Jes Kennedy acts and writes. She also has a Theatre degree and has been on Republic of Doyle, Blue Mountain State, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World to name off some of her resume.
Vivienne AuYeung is our director for the series. She has her MFA in animation and studied directing in Prague. Her passion is storytelling and there’s nowhere she’d rather be than on set. We met last year at the CFC Worldwide Shorts Film Festival where her short animation The Lost Years premiered. You can check out some of her work on her vimeo page.
Questions and Answers with Jill & Jenny
How did you come up with Jill & Jenny?
After one crazy night out we came up with the concept for the web series at four in the morning while we were laughing our butts off sharing stories. Since then we have developed 7 episodes for our first season.
Why a comedic web series? Why these characters?
We love funny women and we love to make other people laugh. Even more so, we love the genuine heartfelt friendship that Jill and Jenny share and we want you to love them too.
Set in Toronto, with the main set being an apartment near Trinity Bellwoods Park.
How did you finance the web-series?
We raised money with an indiegogo campaign. We promised sing- a-long videos to anyone giving more than $25 and a dance video for amounts over $50 – let’s just say we never expected to be making so many videos in our backyard with songs like Pour Some Sugar on Me and Total Eclipse of the Heart. Having friends, family, and strangers contribute to the production and be excited about the show has been amazing.
(Visit their indiegogo campaign page to see videos and pictures.)
Who are the guest stars?
We were lucky to get some fantastic talent to join us on a couple of episodes. You have Rob Norman who plays Jenny’s boyfriend and is so funny, and such a trooper for what we put him through on set. And then William Matthews, Dylan George and Emily Shelton, each all steal the show with their characters. Let’s just say filming on set was not short on laughs.
How did you come up with the material for the episodes?
They’re a mix of our own life experiences, our friends’ and families’ life experiences and a bit of imagination.
Which episodes are real life experiences and which are based on imagination?
We’ll never tell 😉
How long of a process has it been to create and produce Jill & Jenny?
It’s been quite a long process. The concept and writing began in the summer of 2012. Editing scripts and choosing which episodes we wanted to film took us until December 2012. January and February 2013 was pre-production. We filmed for 7 long days at the end of February and beginning of March. March until July 2013 has been editing, color correction, sound mixing, creating an opening title sequence, music composition, etc. Luckily, we have had so much hard work and dedication from our professional team of post-production crew and our director to create a truly unique and quality final product.
What about Christopher Walken?
There’s been some creative differences (namely what kind of lip chap Jenny should wear) between Christopher Walken and our crew and that is the reason he is not working on Jill & Jenny season 1. We may approach him to make a cameo in Season 2 if he ever returns our letters and calls.
I’ve watched both episodes and laughed out loud with the tongue and cheek humour. Jill and Jenny are funny, slightly awkward, and really loveable. I definitely recommend taking a coffee break and enjoying a few laughs! To follow the series, you can subscribe to Jill & Jenny’s youtube page and keep up to date via twitter and facebook.
And if you love it (like I know you will), don’t forget to share the web series with your friends too!
