I personally love the concept of DIYs. That hands-on, frugal, creative way of doing something for yourself – which delivers a great end result and the satisfaction of saying “I did this myself!”. That said, I’ve always been overwhelmed at taking on home projects with a busy schedule and two kids at home that still require my full attention, until the ben & ME bag came along.
This weekend, we moved into a new home and there were quite a few projects all happening at once, but the one that I was in charge of, was painting and decorating Abigail’s new nursery room. Previously in our two bedroom condo, she was bunking with my husband and me in the master bedroom. She is nearly nine months old and now ready for her own space. I was so excited to paint her room and give her a fresh start.
Her new room, before the makeover, was painted taupe. Great for an office, but not for a vibrant, cheerful, bright-eye baby girl! Keeping in mind Abby’s favourite quilt and some of the artwork in her previous space, I started looking at paint swatches at benjaminmoore.ca I wanted something warm, light, and feminine. I was looking in the peach and coral family, but much softer.
I finally decided on Sun Washed – a colour described as a watery, whisper-soft shade; a lovely pale peach reminiscent of fine vintage lace and heirloom. I asked for some help from the colour and design experts at my local Benjamin Moore Signature store on picking the trim. They were very helpful and suggested Chantilly Lace. I loved it as the complimentary colour; as delicate and refined as the lace it was named after, this crisp, clean white evokes images of pure silk, soft linen and simpler times.
[left]Armed with two gallons of premium paint, along with one quart for the trim, and the complete ben & ME bag – which includes; a sleeve roller, paintbrush, paint tray, drop cloth, paint can opener, green painters tape, a How-To Guide, and a jamming playing list – I was set! DIY, here I come. I got this, it’s in the bag!
Before I started, I read the ben & ME bag How-To Guide twice over. It was full of tips that I definitely would have overlooked as a novice. Firstly, I was reminded to TAKE A BEFORE PICTURE! Of course, it seems obvious, but when you’re ready to get going it’s easy to forget and you want to be able to say – tada! Look what I pulled off.
Do the prep work. If there is one thing to absolutely do, it is the preparation. Sand the rough spots on the wall, use a damp cloth and wash down all painting surfaces, and make sure to tape every trim, nook, and area where you DON’T want any paint to get on. My husband also reminded me what a lifesaver it is and how it makes things so much easier when you’re in the thick of painting.
Did you know about painting in a W? Me neither. Boy does it make a difference! Making long tall Ws with your roller, then going back over them to fill in without ever lifting your roller, creates a flawless finish and no roller trails on your walls! What a great tip.
From start to finish, with all the supplies in the ben & ME kit, this DIY paint job was much easier than I anticipated. The hardest part was waiting in between my first and second coat, because I was dying to see the end result!
But the wait was so worth it. Once I rolled on the finishing coat, I could see the richness of the beautiful colour I chose. The sun was setting through the window and it created a warm glow in the entire room. I envisioned evenings of reading to Abigail in the warmth and coziness of her new room. The following morning, the paint was dry and it was time to fill the nursery with furniture, decor, and toys.
As it was coming together, I reflected on the before and then on this amazing after that was in front of my eyes. I felt really proud and excited that I had been able to create this happy new room for my baby girl.
I’m so encouraged and confident from this experience. I know that the ben & ME bag is ready to move on to my son’s new big boy room!
