After giving birth to my second child, my pregnancy weight gain was more difficult to lose than the first time around. Sleep deprivation and an imbalanced thyroid were two contributing factors that made it harder than anticipated. With that in mind, I focused on maintaining an all around healthy lifestyle to heal my body and ultimately begin losing weight.
I appreciate the weight loss tips and products available from Life Brand at Shoppers Drug Mart to encourage weight loss. Along with those tips, I have some of my own to share with you today!
Here are my healthy weight loss tips that can help you achieve weight loss success. Remember, getting your body to it’s optimal weight and health is a daily lifestyle not an end goal, because even when you reach your desired weight, maintaining it with healthy eating and exercising will be a daily commitment.
1. Eat healthy, skip fad diets
There are so many fad diets that you can easily get caught up in, but eating healthy is a lifestyle. To lose weight, create a healthy eating plan that is 500 calories less than your normal daily intake and which is nutrient dense (think lots of vegetables!) to fuel you. Consult with your doctor to find the right caloric intake for your needs.
2. Switch up your workouts
Moving your body is one of the best ways you can start to lose weight and tone your muscles. It also boosts your energy and overall well-being. Sometimes we can get into a fitness rut or de-motivated, in which case I recommend switching up your workouts. Pick at least five activities that you enjoy that will contribute to your health goals. I love to go for walks with my baby, yoga class with my girlfriend, train on the elliptical, do bodyweight workouts outside, and muscle toning exercises and stretches on my mat right before bedtime.
3. Avoid restaurant pitfalls
It is difficult to have portion control when it comes to a restaurant serving. Many restaurants offer a heaping plate that is not in line with a healthy eating plan. Along with large portions, comes heavy use of processed oils and fats, plus additional sodium. Before you dine out, review the menu online and choose a healthy option before hand; this way you won’t be overwhelmed by poor choices at the time when you are hungry to eat! If a restaurant visit is a last minute thing, don’t even open your menu! Ask your server for the healthy meal options that their restaurant offers. You’d be surprised how many off-the-menu choices there are available for you.
4. Get plenty of sleep
Easier said than done, right? From my personal experience, my weight goes up during the weeks that I’ve been up with a sick or teething child. Sleep is crucial to helping the body maintain a healthy weight. Sleep deprivation can contribute to lack of energy, avoiding exercising, relying on comfort foods to get you through the day, and the feeling of being bloated. Take steps to encourage more rest in your life, from earlier nights to afternoon naps.
5. Boost metabolism with green tea and apple cider vinegar
Green tea is filled with antioxidants such as EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate), a substance that can boost metabolism. Apple cider vinegar is also known to help level blood sugar levels and increase metabolic rates. You can get the benefits of both of these with Life Brand Green Tea & Apple Cider Vinegar Supplements.
6. Snack on nuts
Choose a healthy snack that makes you feel full. Delicious natural nuts (no extra salt or sugar, please) are great brain and body fuel. They can also nix those afternoon sugar cravings. I always keep nuts on hand to snack on during the day and to avoid a snacking fail.
7. Track Your Progress Consistently
As you lose weight, it’s important to track your progress to encourage yourself and see that you are realizing goals. The Life Brand Glass Digital Scale is helpful to measure your progress. During a period of focused weight loss, weighing yourself once a week in the morning and writing down your weight loss can help motivate you. On the flip side, the scale shouldn’t be your focus, but rather a tool to encourage your healthy lifestyle.
8. Drink water
Drink a glass of water when you feel hungry to see if you’re actually dehydrated. Often our body is in need of water, which we mistake for hunger. I drink a glass of water first thing when I wake up to start the day on the right foot. Remember that hydration curbs hunger. Load up on Life Brand Natural Spring Water to visibly see lots of water in your fridge when you are about to reach for food – it will trigger a reminder to drink water first.
9. Make a smoothie
Smoothies are a meal in a glass! You can load them up with tons of nutrient rich foods, like kale, spinach, beets, and berries. I drink at least one smoothie a day, usually for breakfast, to keep my energy level strong. Added bonus, your skin starts glowing from all the vitamin C and antioxidants.
10.Treat yourself with dark chocolate
It’s important not to find yourself in a deprived mode of operation when you are working towards a healthier lifestyle. Remaining positive and in control with your choices will help you stay on track and eating well. Keep healthy desserts or treats on hand for those times you are looking for something sweet. A square or two of dark chocolate is a delicious choice to enjoy after dinner. Not to mention, it also has mood enhancing properties and has been linked with lowering the risk of heart disease.
Ultimately, the best tip I can give you is to be kind to yourself. You are giving yourself the gift of health with each healthy choice that you make!
