Hands up if two of your favourite actors are Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills: 90210) and Molly Ringwald (Pretty in Pink). Now, what if I told you that these icons are starring as husband and wife in a new TV show? Raising Expectations is a family comedy created by Tom Saunders (Arrested Development) about The Wayneys, an over-achieving family that isn’t without its quirks!
While the rest of the family gives off the perception of being all sorted out, Emmett who is the youngest, is proud to celebrate his relatively mediocre status in the mix of the family. Wayne and Paige Wayney (yes, his name is Wayne Wayney, I feel like there is a back story…) seem like a fun couple and great parents – even when things aren’t quite going their way.
The new series premiered last week and airs Sunday nights at 7:30pm et/pt. You can watch the trailer here to get a formal introduction. It’s a great show to come together as a family and watch, and I am sure there will be characters you could relate to.
I had a chance to watch the first episode, Wayne’s White Lie, and it had me rolling with laughter a few times. Wayne seriously got himself stuck in his own 20 year old lie (you have to watch it to hear the outrageous make-belief story he told his wife) and his wife, who is a motivational writer and speaker was catching some flak for using it as an example of heroism. The kids find out about the their dad’s shenanigans and well, as you can imagine, a pretty entertaining series of events ensues.
Emmett will have a lead role in the series, as we follow some of the misadventures of The Waynes less-than-perfect son. From the beginning of the show, I found him rather endearing, because he’s kind of the odd one out in his family – which we can all relate to feeling at times. I’m very curious to see what happenings he gets into on the next episode!
Raising Expectations is geared towards families and is relatable on many levels. As a parent, I could easily relate to Paige and Wayne! As a child watching, each of the five Wayne children have very unique personalities, which expands the possibility of connecting with one of the characters more closely. And as a bunch, they’re humorous and heart-warming!
Fun fact: the show is filmed in a real home (not a studio set) in Mississauga, Ontario!
You can watch the first episode of Raising Expectations here and tune in for the fun every Sunday at 7:30pm et/pt on the Family Channel.
I’ll be watching with my family tomorrow night!
