Canadian retailer, Simons, opens its doors tomorrow, August 11th – in the heart of Ottawa. The two storey, 100,000 square foot space sits on the top of the newly expanded wing of the CF Rideau Centre at the corner of Rideau and Nicholas Streets.
As you approach the grand building from the exterior, you can’t help but notice the merging of its modern design with the reconstructed heritage façade. It must be noted, that Cadillac Fairview preserved the building’s historical integrity by removing each brick, cleaning it and remaking the exterior. As someone who loves the uniqueness of old buildings, I’m so thrilled that they were able to do this, instead of tearing it down.
You know that scene in the Sex and The City movie, where Carrie is looking for a new apartment with John (Big) and they enter the penthouse?
“So this is where they keep the light.”
And light there is, plenty of it. There is a gorgeous skylight from which light floods in, making the environment feel fresh, airy, and spacious. Suspended right in the middle of Simons is an art installation by Shayne Dark, called Torrential Red – created using ironwood saplings gathered from the forest near his home in Kingston. It’s a jaw-dropping piece, that makes you stop in your tracks with curiosity and ultimately, admiration.
The elements of design – the atrium, art work, visual displays – it all draws you in and unitedly creates a shopping environment that is, well, above and beyond.
Simons carries a large variety of stylish collections and offers something for everyone, from leading labels to exclusive brands – as well as its well-known private labels.
Whether you’ve been long time Simons devotee (MTL shopping-trippers, I’m looking at you) – or it will be your first time through their doors, you’ll be met with an exciting mix of fashions and beautiful atmosphere.
