One of my favourite things about autumn is the beautiful tapestry of colours that it brings with it. As a family, we enjoy going for nature walks and visiting Gatineau park where, at this time of year, there is a sea of fall hues as far as the eye can see.
This season also comes with its rainy and damp days that, in my opinion, are perfect for turning on the oven and baking family classic recipes like sugar cookies!
On a blustery afternoon, I prepared the sugar cookie dough using Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix and set our dining room table up as a cookie factory. There was the cookie-cutting station, cooling station, and icing and decoration station! While the wind was blowing about outside, my kids and I were warm and cozy indoors, creating tasty treats.
To add a special touch to this batch of sugar cookies, I used chocolate molding wafers as the frosting, which adds a deliciously chocolatey coating that gets rave reviews! There are lots of colours to choose from at your local bulk or candy store, which gives you and your family a rainbow of colours to play with when decorating your own sugar cookies.
We chose to go with two simple fall colours – red and brown. They were a great match for the cookie shapes we selected; an apple, a squirrel, a pumpkin (which doubled as an acorn), and maple leaves – both big and small.
We didn’t leave the store without a visit to the sprinkle aisle to pick up a selection of extra decorations! I’m sure your kiddos are just like mine and when it comes to sugar cookies, decorating them is the best part (before eating them of course!).
After an afternoon of baking fun, we curled up on the couch under a comfy blanket, watched a family movie together and enjoyed our tasty chocolatey sugar cookies.
I hope you’ll give this classic recipe with a twist a try, I know your family with love the chocolate addition as much as mine. Happy baking!
- 1 pouch Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- ½ cup butter, melted
- ½ cup white chocolate flavoured molding wafers (red)
- ½ cup milk chocolate molding wafers
- Sprinkles in fall colours; orange, red, green, brown
- Green icing gel
- Preheat your oven to 375°F. In large mixing bowl, combine Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix, flour, melted butter and egg. Use your hands to form a soft dough.
- Prepare a clean surface. Dust with flour and roll out the dough, approximately ¼ inch thick.
- Using festive, autumn cookie cutters, cut out shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheets - approximately 2 inches apart. Keep similar-sized shapes all on one cookie sheet, as they will differ in cooking times (small shapes will cook faster).
- Bake 7-9 minutes or until edges of the cookies are light golden brown.
- Allow to cool for 2 minutes before moving the cookies to a cooling rack.
- Cool completely before adding the chocolate frosting, about 15 minutes.
- Place the molding chocolates in two separate heat-safe bowls. Melt in the microwave for 45 seconds on medium-high. Stir for even, smooth consistency.
- Using a small serving knife, decorate the cookies with the colours of your choice. Add sprinkles and gel icing for extra detailing.
- Let the chocolate harden on the cookies before storing in a plastic container.
- Molding wafers are a great alternative to traditional icing, they come in an array of colours to let your family’s creativity shine!
