A Chance Date & The Plate of Nachos That Led to Love

First of all, I am not a mushy, gushy romantic one bit. And like most love stories, mine is far from your traditional Cinderella fairy tale. However, mine did happen to coincide perfectly with the song “Falling in Love in a Coffee Shop” by Landon Pigg—but not in a way that you might think.

I was working through college in Lubbock, TX at Starbucks when I turned 21. I had taken the week off to take a big Northeast Coast trip with my family to celebrate. When I returned, there was a new co-worker who had just moved from Houston. At first it was no big deal and we definitely did not have a “love at first sight moment”. Typically, a bunch of us would hang out after work as friends until the wee hours of the morning (college life, right?)

One night it ended up being just the two of us by chance. It was definitely not a “date” by any means—although we did agree to share a plate of Nachos since the single portion was way too big! It wasn’t until that first, one-on-one encounter that I think we both realized that we just clicked. Because we’d been friends awhile, it didn’t take long to realize we were *gasp* in love! We also tried to keep our relationship a secret for a while since we both worked together and didn’t want to make things awkward… but people figured it out soon enough!

We decided to get married our last semester of college in between summer sessions. We didn’t want anything big or fancy and it actually stirred up some debate from our parents who wanted to “throw us a party” while we really wanted to keep it simple with only family and a few friends. We ended up finding the cutest bed and breakfast in Brenham, TX to tie the knot with about 50 people celebrating with us. We ended it with a River Trip in Austin, TX as well as celebrating our Honeymoon at Disney World! There has really been no looking back since that first moment of sharing a plate of nachos or slinging coffee together at Starbucks!

This summer will be our 7th Anniversary of being married. I will also be celebrating my Dirty 30 this year (yikes how time flies!) We’ve finally “settled down” and had our first baby last January and (whoopsies) are expecting our second son in April! We don’t know if we’ll be trying for a third child anytime soon, but we do know we’re in this for the long haul! We have definitely grown up a lot since those crazy college days but we continue to love the road life has taken us on. In those 7 years we’ve traveled to California, New York, Paris, Hawaii, Maine and are excited to take more trips together as a family. It’s going to be one crazy ride but it only gets better and better! Oh, and can I just say, we still drink lots of delicious coffee together—it is an absolute must!
