These classic oatmeal raisin cookies are everything you want them to be! They’re not too sweet, perfectly golden, and go wonderfully with a glass of milk.

What makes these oatmeal raisin cookies SO good?

With a combination of hearty oats, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, vanilla, brown sugar, vanilla, and plump raisins – these oatmeal raisin cookies have everything we love! They are warm, tender, and delicious.

Oats: Not only are they incredibly nutritious, they add a hearty texture to baking that’s hard to resist. Oats are rich in antioxidants, soluble fiber, and manganese.

Cinnamon: We’re kind of obsessed with cinnamon around here. It adds that special something. Cinnamon is also packed with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Raisins: The trick to getting plump, soft, chewy raisins in your cookies is to soak them in warm water before hand. It makes a big difference! Raisins are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals such as iron and calcium.

Why Did We Make These Cookies with Lard?

First of all, you don’t have to use lard. You can use unsalted butter, coconut oil, or margarine. The cookies will taste a little different depending on what you use.

So why did we use lard? Because that’s what Grandma used!

Lard is surprisingly healthy. Did you know lard (from pastured hogs) is the second highest food source of vitamin D, after cod liver oil. One tablespoon of lard contains 1,000 IU’s of vitamin D.

Unlike some other oils, lard is heat stable and won’t oxidize with heat. Plus, it makes baked goods flaky and moist.

Soft and Chewy Gluten-Free Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

These cookies will bring you back to your childhood! They are soft, chewy, and not too sweet. They're the perfect afternoon treat to enjoy with a glass of milk.


  • 3/4 cup all purpose gluten-free flour ((should include xanthan gum, otherwise add 1/2 tsp))
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup lard ((or unsalted butter, coconut oil))
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1/2 cup raisins ((soaked in warm water for 5 minutes))


  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside. Soak raisins in warm water for 5 minutes, then drain.
  2. Combine gluten-free flour, baking powder, spices, and salt in a medium mixing bowl.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat lard (or unsalted butter, coconut oil) and sugars together until smooth. Add in the egg and vanilla extract. Continue beating until blended. Next, incorporate the flour mixture a little at a time and the oats. Keep beating on low until mixed. Finally, fold in the raisins.
  4. Using a tablespoon, scoop up the cookie dough mixture and drop down on to the baking sheet, aproximately 1 1/2 – 2 inches apart. Bake for 11-13 minutes (check around 10 minutes as time varies per oven) or until the edges are golden brown. Remove from oven. Let cool for a few minutes before removing the cookies to cool completely on wire racks.
