One Question that Wasn’t on the Biology Quiz

Hi The Best of this Life readers! I’m Jillian and I write over at coffee, light & sweet, where I blog about…pretty much anything I feel like blogging about! That is to say, I cover a wide range of topics, but specifically I share bits of my personal life, recipes, beauty recommendations, random cool stuff I find on the internet and whatever else strikes my fancy. A few things about me: I love the summer, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, matte lipstick, cookbooks and re-watching my favorite So You Think You Can Dance routines on Youtube. I like to quote Dirty Dancing a lot.

This, is my love story.

Our story was one that took me by surprise. I did not expect to fall for Bob when we first became friends in a college biology class. I’d just gotten out of a relationship and when he and I started dating soon after that, I expected us to be just a casual thing. I didn’t want to be one of those people who just bounced from one serious relationship to another, but he won me over with his intelligence, wit, relaxed nature, big heart, warm smile and his ability to laugh at himself. He’s an easy person to love.

I’d approached Bob one day before class. Everyone, including me, was in the hallway with their noses in their books, cramming for a quiz and he was the only one playing it cool. I knew he was one of the smartest students in the class, so I decided to approach him and pick his brain a little. We chatted about the quiz, but that was about it. Until one day, we started talking after class and he casually mentioned that he’d celebrated his birthday the weekend before. Well, it just so happened that my birthday was that weekend too and we quickly realized we were born only a day apart! I told him all about my b-day shenanigans, while he walked me to the train station. For the rest of that semester, walking and talking our way to my subway stop became our after-class routine.

A little over eight years later, he wrote me in a letter, “ No one expects they’ll make the smartest decision of their life at 20 years old, but I know I did—when I overheard your birthday was the same weekend as mine and I used it an ice-breaker to our first real conversation”, which was right before I looked over at him holding up the most beautiful engagement ring I’ve ever seen.

Today, we’re engaged, looking to own our first home together and I’m about 5 months pregnant with our first child. For a couple that has taken our time with everything, we’ve certainly made up for it in just a few short months! But it isn’t all that scary, it’s an exciting, hopeful and happy time in our lives. I couldn’t imagine anyone better with whom to embark on this next chapter. I can see it in the way he treats others and I can see it in the way he touches my belly in awe when our little girl starts dancing around in there. As sappy as it sounds, I think we’re still living the best parts of our love story and we will be for years to come. I really do believe that.
